Shopping for baby clothes can be fun, but it can also be a pain in the bumbum. Everything is so cute, but with the speed babies grow out of their clothes, it starts to add up!

Because I know my kid won’t wear everything for very long, I like to shop for simple, minimal items. That way, I can create more outfits from less clothes!

These are my favourite places to get baby clothes in Winnipeg, Manitoba, from budget-friendly clothes to more high-end stuff:

Shop second hand

Thrifting has gained massive popularity over the last few years, and there’s no reason that can’t apply to our kids' clothes, too.

Facebook marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a goldmine — if you don’t already use it, I’d highly recommend trying it out! It’s basically online thrifting. The baby clothes I find are often good quality, and many people offer baby clothing bundles (some with 30+ pieces of clothing!) for a set price, so you get a really great deal.

Once Upon a Child is like Plato’s for kids. I love it here because you can get name-brand baby clothes at a more affordable price, plus you can make money by selling your old clothes to them. They also have a store rewards program that gets you special discounts and promotions. They conveniently have two locations in Winnipeg locations — one by Polo Park, and one near Transcona. The trip is worth it!

Buying name-brand doesn’t have to cost a lot! Once Upon a Child in Winnipeg has Adidas, Roots, Vans… you name it!

Ask around! Seriously, parents love giving things away for free to people they know. I guarantee your other parent friends would love to give you their baby’s old clothes. Who else is going to wear it once their kid has grown out of it, anyway?

buying new

h&m canada kids

H&M, is one of the best places for clothing for babies and toddlers, especially minimal pieces and basics. My favourite thing about their baby section is their multipack deals, like this five-pack of long-sleeve shirts, or this five-pack of bodysuits, both for just $30. They also have a new Rewear program, where you can buy and sell used kids clothes online!

You can get basic bundles like this at H&M Canada for $30 (and they’re always having promotions, so you could even grab them on sale)!

joe fresh

In my opinion, JoeFresh is seriously underrated. Their baby and toddler styles are super cute, and they have lots of clothes under $15 and $20 — even their new stuff! You shouldn’t have to break the bank to give your baby some style.  How convenient is it to go grocery shopping and get some clothing? That just saves you an extra trip (and time, since we don’t have a lot of that).

JoeFresh often has “Buy More Save More” deals, like these basic leggings (2 for $16) or printed leggings (2 for $14)!

trendy tots

Trendy Tots has 3 locations in Winnipeg and sells super cute, high-quality baby and kids clothes. I do love that a lot of their selection is minimalistic, so they’re clothes you can pair with lots of other things you already own and get good use from. Their stuff can be a bit on the pricier side, but the quality is the best! It’s a great option especially if you plan to use the clothes as hand me downs for your younger children. Don’t forget to check their kids’ sale clothes while you shop.

I’m willing to spend a bit more on

high-quality basics I know will be worn

and washed often and still hold up, like

basic joggers and tees.

Overall, my top tip for buying baby clothes is to try and keep it minimal. It can be tough because kids’ clothes are just so darn cute! We all know they’re going to grow out of everything in the blink of an eye.

For items they use and get washed frequently, I prefer to buy quality — footless zip-up onesies, thermal wear, hats, mits, boots, jackets, sleep sacks, etc. This way, I don’t have to worry about their quality decreasing much with each wash, and I won’t have to replace it after just a few wears.

All their other clothes, like onesies, tops, and bottoms, I’ll buy on sale or in bundles that will get me a better price than just buying one or two.

This is also how I buy clothes for my baby photography wardrobe! To match the minimal photography style, I keep a minimalist baby wardrobe kids can wear for shoots, in case parents don’t know what else to put them in. It’s a small thing that’s been so incredible to have, and a lifesaver some days (for me and parents)!
